Fire Stopping
Firestopping is a form of passive fire protection to stop the spread of fire and smoke throughout a building. To achieve this, services, joints and openings are sealed with suitable products to achieve the required Fire Resistance Level (FRL).
Installing firestopping systems can be quite challenging in some situations where space for the number of services is limited. Generally, most systems require minimum clearances (apertures) of 40mm, however, if space allows, we prefer to have 60mm or more for ease of access & installation.
If you engage us early on in the scope of works, our technicians will work with the supervisors and other contractors on site to give direction regarding system type & required clearances of the relevant firestop system design to ensure compliance. This will help eliminate costly rectification works and lengthy time delays because if differing services are mixed that aren’t compliant with a tested system, services may have to be re-run or alternative products sourced.

Fire Rating of Ducting
Ducting can be fire rated to protect the spread of fire into and out of internal and external ducting, eg air conditioning, kitchen exhaust, air plenums.
Barrier Passive Fire Protection can work with the client to determine the product best suited for the project.
There are various options for treating ducting:
- Fire Spray (vermiculite)
- Wrap
- Fire Board
- Inspection Openings
Fire Spray
We specialize in the application of vermiculite spray.
Usually, pins are spot welded to the ducting, mesh is applied, then the vermiculite spray is applied.
Fire Spray can also be used in conjunction with other tested systems.
Wrap
Ducts can be wrapped with specific insulation products.
Wrapping can have a cleaner looking more atheistic finish.
Usually, ducts will have one layer of wrap for the full length, either side of fire walls will have localised protection at the fire wall itself with an additional layer of wrap either side and, the extent of this additional layer is determined by the duct size.
Smaller ducts will have strapping & foil tape to secure the wrap, larger ducts will also have spot welded pins to secure the insulation wrap.
If the ducts can be wrapped on the ground prior to installation, this can reduce labour costs as once they’re installed, we then only have to wrap them locally around the joints and tend to any installation damage.
(it’s much easier working at ground level than it is from an ewp).
Board
There are various boards to suit differing situations that ducts can be clad with.
Board is usually only used locally around fan housings / inspection hatches, however, can be used to encase entire ducts.

Inspection openings come in various sizes and can be installed to suit your requirements.
Structural Steel
Steel construction is a fast efficient form of construction, where, like the Westralia Square 2 project, with minimal lay down area, the steel was craned into position straight off the back of the truck, closely followed by CLT flooring, achieving approximately 500m² of floor area per week.
Structural steel needs to be fire rated to maintain the structural integrity of the building and can be treated in a variety of ways.
Fire Spray
This is the most economical method of treatment for a large area of steel.
Internal applications we can apply vermiculite fire spray to achieve your required FRL.
External applications we apply a cement based product such as Fendolite to achieve your required FRL.
Board
Board application is an aesthetically pleasing finish, which can be flushed ready for a paint finish.
It is neater than spray & cost effective too.
Intumescent Paint
Intumescent paint is applied in multiple layers over multiple days to achieve the required dry film thickness for your FRL. When exposed to fire conditions, the paint expands to create an insulation barrier around the steel.
For this to be effective, there must always be clearance around the finished painted area of approx. 60mm.
Intumescent paint is a visually pleasing paint finish, it is great for exposed supporting columns within the centre of a floor space of buildings.
3rd Party Audits and Certification Packages
Audits of existing firestop systems can be undertaken to ensure ongoing compliance.
Our technicians can come to site and inspect your existing systems to ensure they comply.
Upon completion of our inspection an audit register is provided outlining any items that may have failed the inspection & their location.
Obviously, we are only able to inspect areas that are accessible.
